Four faculty members at Stony Brook University were selected to receive the prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) program award. The award, which includes a substantial grant to support research over a five-year period, is given to promising young faculty members who exemplify the role of teacher-scholar through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of both education and research. –

The research team includes PI John Parise, PhD, a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Geosciences and the Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook with a joint appointment at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL); Artem Oganov, PhD, Professor of Theoretical Crystallography in the Department of Geosciences and Department of Physics and Astronomy at Stony Brook; and Alexander Orlov, PhD, Assistant Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at Stony Brook. Their project, entitled “High-Pressure Synthesis of Novel Oxynitride Photocatalysts Directed by Theory and In Situ Scattering,” will integrate theory, synthesis and property measurements with the aim of unlocking the potential of high pressure as a routine tool for solid state materials discovery.
