In this research, Zhan Guo, a professor of urban planning and transportation policy at NYU, investigates whether the availability of street parking would affect the car ownership of households who already have a private garage or driveways. He collects home parking information through Google Street View and links it to households in the travel diary survey in the New York City region. Results show that readily available AND free street parking on residential streets increases private car ownership by nearly 9%; that is, 1 out of 11 cars owned by households with off-street parking are purchased due to the availability of street parking.
