Steven Chien is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). He holds B.S. degree from Tamkang University in Taiwan and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Maryland at College Park. Between 1985 and 1996, he worked for China Engineering Consultants Inc. (Taipei, Taiwan), University of Maryland (College Park, MD), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA-TFHRC, McLean, VA), and Information Dynamic Inc. (Washington, D.C.) on various transportation projects. He has been involved in developing microscopic traffic simulators (FRESIM and CORSIM) for FHWA and conduct experiments in evaluating various ITS applications and transportation management strategies. Since 1996, he has been many research projects funded by public (e.g., USDOT, FHWA, and NJDOT) and private (e.g., Greyhound Line Inc.) sectors.

Dr. Chien's current research activities and interests include: (1) travel times prediction in congested traffic networks, (2) mathematical and simulation modeling (3) transportation system analysis (4) intelligent transportation systems. His teaching activities include undergraduate and graduate courses: Introduction to Transportation Systems, Civil Engineering Design (Transportation), Transportation Engineering, Urban Systems Engineering, Public Transportation Systems Operations and Technologies, Mass Transportation Systems, and Traffic Safety.

Dr. Chien is a member of Sigma Xi, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society for Engineering Education, Transportation Research Board, and Institute of Transportation Engineers. He is the faculty advisor to the student chapter of Institute of Transportation Engineers at NJIT.

Dr. Chien has authored and co-authored of many articles published in refereed journals, conferences symposia proceedings, and project reports. He currently serves as a member on the editorial board of Journal of Enterprise Information Management and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Advanced Transportation.
