The New York State Thruway, Route I-87, from New York to Albany and the Northway from Albany to the New York Canadian Border defines a major transportation corridor promoting commerce, tourism, commuting and a range of other activities. The corridor lies in the Eastern part of New York State; it links New York City to Canada and serves as crossroad points to New England, the Midwest and the South.

Scientists at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Lighting Research Center (LRC) are developing a lighting system to increase the safety of pedestrians crossing the street at nighttime. Led by John Bullough, the researchers evaluated different crosswalk lighting systems to determine which would best illuminate the pedestrian and provide enough background contrast to increase visibility. The study was supported by the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration through the University Transportation Research Center at the City University of New York.

<p>Transportation credit mortgage (TCM) programs are intended to reduce auto use, decrease sprawl, and increase housing options for low- and moderate-income households. The centerpiece of such programs is a credit to income for expected savings on auto use for households who purchase a home with good transit access and/or high population density. It is hoped, first, that a higher share of those in target neighborhoods will consist of households who use transit and walk; second, that there will be more housing provided in target neighborhoods.

For its 4 per cent of the world?s motor vehicles, the fatalities on African roads exceed 10%. With further motorization, the number of road traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities are expected to continue to grow. The road carnage has severe impact on the human, social and economic development. The present study intends to update the status, trends, causes, existing countermeasure, and issues in traffic safety, facing African countries.

The main objective of this paper is to assess key economic impacts, mainly output, employment, and earnings, in Northern New Jersey from recent major transportation infrastructure investments, mainly in rail. This effort is part of the New Jersey 21st Century study carried out by the University Transportation Research Center, Region II, for the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Regional multipliers, derived from input-output analysis, have been used widely to measure economic impacts.

<p>This paper presents an analysis of the residential relocations that followed the New Jersey Transit Midtown Direct rail improvement. The increased transit accessibility provided by the Midtown Direct connection reduced one-way commuting travel times by 15-20 minutes between New Jersey and New York. The analysis examines the residential decision-making process of travelers before and after the rail improvement. It is based on revealed preference surveys mailed by City College of New York (CCNY) to 1242 riders in 2001.
