Summer Institute

In partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, the CUNY Institute for Transportation Systems has been operating a Summer Transportation Institute (STI) for high school students at The City College of New York annually since 1996. This program bridges the gap between supply and demand, by creating awareness and stimulating interest in high school students to take maximum advantage of the opportunities that exist in the transportation industry. The program is envisioned as part of a “pipeline” interconnecting links between educational institutions and the workplace through all educational levels.

The highly stimulating, four-week STI program introduces students to many topics, including careers in transportation; passenger and freight transportation; management of transportation systems; innovations in transportation; intermodalism; social, economical and environmental impacts of transportation systems; construction engineering issues; and the transferability of the multitude of engineering specializations to transportation.

Strong support for the Summer Transportation Institute - in the form of funding and/or participation - has been provided by the Federal Highway Administration, the New York City Department of Transportation, the New York State Department of Transportation, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, New York City Transit, the University Transportation Research Center, Gandhi Engineering, Urbitran Associates Inc., the New York City Board of Education, New Jersey Transit Light Rail Planning and Management Office, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, New York City Maritime Administration and the City University of New York Community.

For more information about the Summer Transportation Institute, contact Alma Jefferson at (212) 650-8057.
