This project constitutes a research effort to verify and calibrate a Dynamic Toll Lane (DTL) microsimulation model (Phase I) that will be used to test innovative pricing and control strategies aimed at reducing congestion (Phase II), specifically in a DTL and the main tollway lanes in the Metropolitan Area of San Juan, PR. The DTL was built recently and has already experienced congestion at the entrances and exits. The primary objective of this facility is to reduce, in some way, the time it takes to traverse the congested section of the freeway during peak hours. UPRM will create the simulation of the DTL using the driving simulator to study the user behavior characteristics that influence traffic congestion. In addition to the data collected at the Traffic Control Center that was built for this facility, data will be gathered using drones at the entrance and exits of the DTL to measure the queue development and obtain the data needed for model verification and calibration. This research will take this endeavor a step forward by using the driving simulation results to get critical parameters that can help calibrate and simulate the DTL facilities using microsimulation. The resulting models can be implemented to study these types of facilities that have the potential to reduce congestion while entering/exiting heavily congested urban areas. Microsimulation results will be integrated with the drivers’ behavior study results using the driving simulator.
