Implementation of Advanced Fiber Optic and Piezoelectric Sensors in Smart Bridges

Cracking is among the most important parameters that adversely influence the structural design and durability of concrete elements. Early detection of cracks and excessive displacements in concrete bridge structures will result in increased safety and considerable savings in rehabilitation costs. Research is needed for the development of embedded sensors for real-time detection, and measurement of displacements associated with crack openings and propagations. The proposed research will examine the feasibility of using a system of optical fiber and piezo-electric sensors for integration in an experimental full scale concrete bridge structure.
