Work zones are a necessary part of meeting the needs of our nation?s aging transportation infrastructure. With the highway infrastructure getting older and requiring consistent maintenance, it is believed that there will be more work zones in future. These work zones coupled with traffic on highways is a major source of future congestion. Due to this congestion, there are more chances of crashes expected, which is a major cause of concern. This increased frequency of work in the work zones makes it necessary to work at day and nighttime, requiring special precautionary measures to avoid hazards. It is estimated that work zones contribute to about 24% of highway delay making people more frustrated due to loss of time. This is graphically shown in Figure1. (1)
